Baby Ferret Introduction – Some Things You Might Not Know

]]>

It is undeniable that baby ferrets have become one of the most adorable pets preferred by pet owners.  Their playful and cheerful nature has enamored numerous pet owners for many years.  However, any ferret owner should also not take for granted the welfare, safety and well-being of his or her new baby ferret.  Ferret owners should seriously take responsibility to ensure that their baby ferrets will receive the adequate and appropriate care they deserve.

A Baby ferret, or kit, is usually born with approximately 7 other baby ferrets in the same litter. At birth, baby ferrets are pink-skinned, sightless and hairless and kind of resemble new born mice, if you have seen them. Newly-born ferrets start opening their eyes and using their sense of sight at or around the age of 20 days.  Ferret owners must wait for the baby ferret to reach at least 7 weeks old before bringing the pet to a veterinarian for his first vaccination. The new born must be at least 6 weeks old before being weaned but Mother Nature will ultimately have the final say on when this is to occur so you don’t have to worry about this one.

Baby ferrets grow fast especially after the weaning period has expired and he starts to consume food that his adult peers enjoy.  In just a few days his skeletal structure starts to develop and grow and it is important for him to get the correct nourishment to encourage strong bone growth. Ferret owners also need to provide the baby ferret with the same kind and amount of nutrients for adult ferrets when they reach 6 weeks old as stated previously. This is a very important part of his growing up.

The major distinguishing characteristic of an ideal diet for a baby ferret is the low requirement on calories.  However, a baby ferret’s diet must be rich in protein and fats. A combination of 35% protein and 25% fat is considered as a minimum recommended dietary serving for kits. In choosing a particular brand of ferret food to feed a baby ferret it is advisable to choose brands which can provide this amount of nourishment. Being consistent in the brand of foods to feed a kit will also help avoid digestion irritations and complications.  Changes must be done gradually by mixing a small portion of the new food with a regular serving of the old food until the baby ferret gets used to it.

Water is another primary need of the baby ferret.  Baby ferrets should have a daily supply of clean and fresh water.  It is advisable to place a water bowl near or inside the ferret cage so he has easy access to it at all times.  Drinking from water bowls is more convenient to your baby ferret than drinking from water bottles.  It is strongly discouraged to use plastic containers because of the natural tendency of baby ferrets to chew.

When I first started to learn about ferrets I wish I would have known some of the things mentioned above as I no doubt would have avoided many unfortunate mistakes. I hope this helps you in your quest to become the best ferret parent you can.

Choosing a Ferret Diet: is a Natural Diet Right for Your Ferret?

Until the last 40 years, ferrets were fed what we refer to as a “natural diet,” which was similar to the diet of the domestic ferret’s wild ancestors. In recent years as ferrets have become more popular, they have been fed commercially prepared ferret, cat, and kitten diets. While this is convenient for us as owners, is it what our ferrets were meant to eat? What exactly is a natural diet, and what are the benefits and concerns associated with it?

Ferrets — the Ideal Pet

If you love pets that are quiet and cute, then ferrets will be the right choice. Because by their very appearance, many people tend to mistake them for rodents but they are actually more like a cross between a cat and a dog.

During earlier times ferrets were used to hunt down, or dig out rabbits from their burrows. But nowadays they are mostly kept as pets. If you are thinking of buying a ferret, you should buy one from reputable shelters or breeders or from the Humane Society.
