The type of food you choose to feed your ferret is very important, be sure it is either a good high quality cat food or a ferret food that has not be made from frozen meat. You should find out which brand of food the ferret has been eating before you bring it home. If you decide to change brands you must wean the ferret off the old food. To do this, mix a small portion of the new food in with the old food and gradually increase the amount of new food every day, until the ferret becomes accustomed to the new taste. Snacks for ferrets are not necessary but if you decide to give your ferret a snack, choose healthy options such as cook eggs and meat. Do not feed your ferret sugary treats, this will only harm them.

Before taking your ferret home there are a couples of things you should know. First of all, you need to choose housing for your ferret. Just keep in mind that this will be where your ferret will be spending the majority of their time and it should be comfortable and safe. There are various options for ferret cages, the important thing is to make sure that there is enough space for your ferret to run around in. Be sure there are no gaps in the levels because this may catch and hurt your ferret. The keep your ferret safe and cozy the cage should always nice soft bedding. Plastic bottom cages are a better alternative to metal bottom cages. Plastic is easy to clean, but the metal ones bottoms rust and look dirty even after constant cleaning. It is also important, if you choose to buy plastic coated metal, that you make sure your ferret does not chew the coating off because this can lead to intestinal blockages. The cage should have multiple layers and large doors. Large doors will ensure that your ferret will not get stuck while trying to get out of the cage.

Also, purchasing sleeping sacks and hammocks to provide your ferret with more areas to sleep, with make them more comfortable and happy. Remember ferrets sleep about 15- 20 hours per day on average. Your ferret also needs to spend two hours per day outside their cage. Also consider ferret proofing a room so they can run around without getting hurt.

Your ferret will also lots of toys to play with, but be careful which items you choose to purchase. Some toys can place your ferret’s in harm’s way. Make sure the toys are durable because ferrets have sharp teeth. Cat toys are great choice for ferrets. Stay away from plastic or foam toys they can be easily destroyed. Do not leave any toys in the cage unless you are supervising. If a toy is damaged and the ferret eats a piece, it can result in an obstruction and it will then need to be surgically removed.

Ferrets are part of the Mustelid family therefore they do have an odor to them, it is best that you set up an appointment with your veterinarian to have your ferret de-scented and neutered. Often both of these procedures can be done in the same visit. When your ferret is home be sure to follow the veterinarian’s aftercare instructions to ensure your ferrets health. Your ferret also needs regular examinations and vaccinations. Most baby ferrets have only gotten their first series of shots. You should be aware of when they received their shots, and be sure to continue the series. After the first series of distemper shots are finished your ferret will only need the shot annually. Ferrets also need their booster vaccination.

Preparing to take your ferret home takes a lot of planning but it will ensure that your furry friend is healthy and safe.
