The Black-footed ferret is part of the Mustelidae family, along with badgers, polecats, otters and weasels. While many tend to identify domesticated ferrets with the Black-footed ferret, it is further revealed that such should not be the case. In fact, the following black-footed ferret facts will show the clear difference.
Black-footed ferrets are considered endangered. Meaning, its population is currently threatened by factors such as growth and industrial progress. In the United States, the black-footed ferrets are considered endangered since 1960’s, which gives us further reasons to respect and effect some form of change. Surprisingly, black-footed ferrets came back to existence, when it was discovered in Wyoming in the early 80’s and from there, an amazing resurgence so happened.
Studying their physiology also comprises this set of black-footed ferret facts. In fact, a black-footed ferret weighs at an estimated two pounds. Its measurements give approximate numbers ranging from 45 centimeters in length, as well as a six-inch tail measurement. Like other members of the Mustelidae family, black-footed ferrets have short legs and elongated bodies.
Color, for the most part, is an ideal characteristic and is listed as one of the most lovable black-footed ferret facts. White is the most prominent color affecting the ferret’s fur, starting from its base. Noticeably, you can see how the whiteness darkens at the animal’s tips, appearing more like brown or yellowish. The animal’s black feet is undoubtedly a recognizable trait and not to mention its defining black-colored face.
Their behavior is also interesting as part of the black-footed ferret facts. Known as hunters, these ferrets are nocturnal and prefer prairie dogs as potential victims. Smaller species such as birds and insects are also viable preys. It has also been said that these types of ferrets consume around hundred prairie dogs per year and their survival naturally depend on these dog colonies.
Another interesting part of these black-footed ferret facts has something to do with their mating. Primarily, mating season starts from March and ends around April. The number of expected offspring also varies, with three to four kits as common average.
True enough, knowing these black-footed ferret facts will make us realize the value of maintaining a good habitat. Not only is this a requirement for humans, as animals like the black-footed ferrets need this as an essential. Nowadays, efforts are exerted by various governments to ensure the black-footed ferrets’ survival, which is why it is necessary to cooperate and help these animals live a longer life.
