Ferret Facts – Important Information About Ferrets

Once you adopt a pet, it is important to familiarize yourself with its wants and its normal behavior. You will have to cater to its individual needs to take proper care of it. A ferret requires more care and understanding because of its unique inquisitive nature and small size. Here are some ferret facts to help you get to know your little furry pet better.

Physical features

There are several types of ferrets such as albino, sable and angora. These differ in coat color and hair length. The average lifespan of healthy ferrets is eight to ten years. Spring and summer are their mating seasons. The pregnancy lasts for about forty-two days, and female ferrets usually give birth to six to ten babies at one delivery. When a ferret becomes four months old, it is considered fully grown and acquires distinguishing features of its type. The left lung of a ferret has two lobes, and the right one has four. The rib cage contains fourteen to fifteen pairs of ribs. A baby ferret, the kit, will have thirty teeth only, while an adult will have thirty-four.

Ferrets do not have strong vision and hearing capacities. However, their sense of smell is superior and whiskers are extremely sensitive, helping in their perceptive capabilities. They can dig energetically and climb nimbly but cannot jump.

Food habits

Ferrets are carnivorous predators. They do not have a cecum – the part of the intestine that helps digest fruits and vegetables. Their diet should consist entirely of meat and poultry items because they need a lot of protein. Raw meat will supply the high amount of protein that they need and help maintain the health of their teeth as well. Older ferrets will not need so much protein though, and bones can substitute raw meat. The diet should also have low fat content.

Behavioral Features

Ferrets are famous for their intelligence and agility. But they also love to take naps. These tiny creatures may curl up anywhere in your room – be sure to check before you sit down!

The ferrets can be toilet trained, and they can also learn tricks if taught gently with patience. Domesticated ferrets become entirely dependent on humans for survival. If for some unforeseen reason, you find it difficult to care for your ferret, be sure to send it to an animal shelter. Otherwise, it will perish.

Keep these ferret facts in mind and give your ferret attention to bring it up healthy and happy, and you will have a playful, amusing companion for years.
