You may have seen ferrets on TV or in the movies. They’re awfully cute. In days gone by they were often used by hunger to help “ferret out” other small game. Today, though, they are seen by some people as an ideal pet.
Ferrets are available for purchase from breeders, pet stores, or animal shelters. You can expect to pay about $75 to $125 on average. Don’t even think about trying to catch a wild ferret to make into a pet. They simply won’t be able to adjust to that kind of lifestyle.
Ferret Breeders
There’s several ways to find a ferret breeder. You can check newspaper ads, yellow page listings and even online. A lot of breeders will expect you to pick up any ferret you decide to purchase from them. There are a few, though, that are will to ship, but you’ll have to pay the shipping fees.
You need to pick the seller that is most convenient for you. However, it’s always a good idea to visit the breeder if you can. That way you’ll be able to see the environment the ferrets are being raised in.
Buy A Ferret
Prior to making the commitment to buy a ferret, you need to check with the local game and wildlife agency to ensure that owning a ferret is legal in your locale. There are some places, such as California, where it is illegal to keep a pet ferret. Another thing you should check, as well, if that there is a vet in your area that is familiar with treating ferrets.
Before your make your final selection, check the ferret carefully. You’ll want to see bright eyes, a full coat and healthy looking skin. It should also seem pretty playful. Inquire about its age and gender as well. Male ferret will be longer and heavier than female ferrets.
Buying the ferret is only the beginning. Now you’ll need to know how to keep your pet healthy and happy. As long as you have the correct information, and give them lots of love and attention, you’re well on your way to having a happy pet. Ferrets are pretty active when they’re awake, however, they like to sleep more than 15 hours each day.
Ferret Cages
Choosing the right housing option for your ferret is important. The ideal ferret cage should be at least 18″ x 18″ x 30″. It needs to be large enough so they can move around and play with their toys. You’ll also need to be sure that the cage bars are spaced close enough together so your pet can’t squeeze out of his cage and get lost.
In addition to the cage, you’ll want to have a litter box and the time to train your ferret to use it.
Ferret Diet
Making sure your ferret has the proper diet is challenge you need to be prepared for. They need lots of protein and fat, so a specially formulated ferret food is probably your best choice. Avoid any foods that are high in carbs or sugar. Giving your ferret this kind of food will cause health problems for them down the road.
Ferret Odor
Some people are concerned about owning a ferret because of their odor. Most breeders will sell you a ferret that has been de-scented and neutered. De-scenting, however, does not remove all of the natural odor of a ferret, it just makes it a little less strong. Giving your pet a bath every now and then should help reduce the odor somewhat.
Pets can be a wonderful addition to any family. However, as with any pet, be sure you are prepared for the commitment of ownership.
