Have you ever wondered how other pet owners command their pets with ease? Would you also like to be as cool as them? With your ferret, it is not impossible to teach them how to follow you. They are intelligent creatures that won’t be so hard to train. Here are some tips that you can use to make training easier for you.

Patience and Consistency

When training your pet to follow orders, remind yourself that it won’t be smooth sailing. It takes some time and a lot of patience for your pet to understand what it needs to do. Your patience meter should never be in the red mode. If you feel like you’re about to lose it after several tries, then give both you and your ferret time and space before you continue. Consistency is also needed. If you give them orders without a certain pattern, then they won’t remember what your command is for. Positive reinforcement can make it easier for you. Give your ferret a treat if he did something good but do not punish them because they may associate a certain command with pain. 1

Knowing the Name

Repetition of his name every time you call your pet ferret can be one essential step to help you out in dealing with him. Before teaching him other tricks, it is best that you start with the name. Every time you approach him, say his name and give him a treat. This way, he will know that you are specifically calling him especially if there are a number of ferrets in the household. 2

The More , The Merrier

If you are planning to introduce a new ferret in your existing army of ferrets, it is best that this is done within a month of the purchase of the previous ferret. Do not place them in one cage immediately. Just like a new fish being transferred to its new aquarium, it is wise to let the newcomer adjust first to the environment around him. When ready, you can let the new ferret join the other ferrets. Supervise their first time together because this may lead to hissing and quarreling. Don’t worry, eventually, they’ll become playmates for good. 3

Clicker Training

Another way of training your ferret is by using a clicker. It is a toymaker used by animal trainers in getting the desired response from their pets. Clickers produce various sounds which the ferret can use to associate the specific sound to a command. Clickers can be bought from different stores. 4

The Earlier, The Better

The younger the ferret, the easier for it to learn new tricks. Keep on practicing the trick for them to remember the commands every time you say it. Don’t be lazy. That won’t help. Be ready to give them at least 10 minutes of practice every day rather than 30 minutes. Don’t forget that they have short attention span. Don’t waste your energy and effort by prolonging practice sessions. 5
