Keeping A Pet Ferret

There are a lot of things you need to know about keeping a pet ferret. They are mischievous little creatures that get into everything, so in many instances it is hard to keep them contained or safe. This article will cover a brief list of things you need to know and do for your pet ferret.
I believe the ultimate key to keeping a pet ferret is awareness. You can’t keep it safe if you don’t know where it is and what it’s getting into. This can be done either by ferret proofing a room and confining your ferret for play, or putting a bell around its neck and watching carefully. You can mix and match these strategies to start. It will make your job easier.
The second part of that awareness lies in knowing if what your ferret is doing or playing with could be harmful. Ferrets have very flexible skeletal systems and are known escape artists. This is why the concept of ferret proofing anything is imperfect. Sooner or later they will surprise you if you haven’t done your research.
Leaving your pet ferret in its cage all of the time isn’t really an option either. First of all, ferrets are, by nature, active in their waking hours; they need to run free from time to time. Second, it’s rather hard to do maintenance on its cage if your ferret is still in there.
Another part of keeping your pet ferret healthy lies in maintenance. In this category I’m including the washing of toys, hammocks, cages, food and water dishes, as well as emptying the litter tray and keeping up with any needed vaccinations.
Your ferret will be healthier overall if it gets plenty of exercise. Aim to let your ferret roam free or play with him or her for at least 30 minutes each day. Either way, you’re going to want to make sure your ferret has plenty of toys to choose from, otherwise be prepared to have your stuff stolen and/or turned into a toy.
Although pet ferret care may seem complex or overwhelming at times, as long as you care enough about your ferret, the rest comes naturally.

If you love pets that are quiet and cute, then ferrets will be the right choice. Because by their very appearance, many people tend to mistake them for rodents but they are actually more like a cross between a cat and a dog.
During earlier times ferrets were used to hunt down, or dig out rabbits from their burrows. But nowadays they are mostly kept as pets. If you are thinking of buying a ferret, you should buy one from reputable shelters or breeders or from the Humane Society.
