Help answer the question about ferret diet food
Raw food diet for ferret?
I want to start feeding my ferrets (and possibly dog and cats too) the B.A.R.F. (biologically appropriate raw foods) diet, as I found out it increases their longevity. Can someone please help me find a place to buy prepackaged raw ferret food? I've found it for cats and dogs, but I can't find it for ferrets ferret diet food and they have different vitamin needs and cant digest anything but meat. I'm too nervous about borne illness to prepare it myself. The ferrets are the most pressing, as one probably needs surgery to remove an adrenal tumor and I got a reality check about their typical lifespan on commercial diets. They are 4 1/2 now and the vets never seen one older than 6. On the BARF diet they usually live into their teens. I'm also looking into V.I.B.E. therapy if I can find someone with a VIBE machine in Virginia. As for the food-price is no object. If we're going to pay over a thousand dollars for Rascal's surgery we're not going to skimp on the food to keep them healthy

In the last fifty years or more... as the ferret has gained popularity as a pet... owners have grown increasingly dissatisfied with the food choices for them. Nothing is available, it seems, that meets all of their nutritional requirements. So it is not surprising to find a rapidly growing segment of ferret owners who have decided to take the nutritional health and status of their beloved pets into their own hands. Just as you find natural health enthusiasts in the human realm, you will meet the same type of people in the pet sector. And I only have one word to say to them, "More power to you." (Okay that is more than one word.)

But, these individuals try as much as they can, to provide their ferrets with the meats, the organs and the bones needed for their pets' health. They do not feed their ferret kibble using the very simple logic that kibble was not a part of any ferret diet some 2,500 years ago. I will try to explain, as concisely as possible, what they believe the benefits of a natural alternative diet for their ferret diet food ferrets are.

Some people refer to this alternative diet as an "evolutionary" diet. It ensures, according to its proponents, that the ferret is receiving the nutrient essential to his continued good health. They like to explain that the ferret needs nine essential amino acids. Essential amino acids are those the ferret's system cannot produce itself, so it must get from its diet. There is just no other way. These substances are normally found in foods that the ferret's wild relatives eat quite frequently. They include rabbits, mice, rats, birds, frogs, lizards, and even squirrels.

Calcium is another aspect of the diet that your ferret may be lacking. You may be surprised to learn that many manufactured canned cat foods -- and even ferret foods -- do not have any type of quality bone meal included. This means ferrets may be lacking in calcium. A healthy ferret diet does not necessarily mean that a ferret needs to have food available to him 24/7. A ferret who eats the proper diet may not want to eat again for another 10 hours. The untamed variety of ferret, or polecat, only ate once, sometimes twice a day.

Additionally, health conscious individuals say that the natural variety of foods that are a part of this evolutionary diet -- from bones to meat to skin -- helps to "flush out" the intestinal tract of the animal. This means that your ferret will have less hairballs and other unnecessary obstructions. It also may take care of some nutritional needs that the ferret has, that science has yet to detect. Not only that, these people say, just look at design of both your ferret's jaw and his teeth. This leaves him with a limited chewing capacity. His teeth, they say, definitely evolved to cut meat and bone. Not to smash kibbles for up to ten hours a day. The other pretty amazing aspect of this diet is that it does not lead to dental cavities or other tooth problems. It is thought that the different textures of the prey foods help to massage the ferret's gums and therefore clean the teeth in the process (Isn't Mother Nature wonderful?)

This diet is better than many others, don’t get me wrong, but I believe it is best supplemented with other foods such as 8-1 ultimate crunchy in like a 3:1 ratio (1 being the zupreem), because this diet makes my ferret’s poop really sticky and soft and harder to clean up.

Before taking your ferret home, make sure that your ferret has been given the necessary vaccinations. It is also a good idea to consult a local veterinarian for information on common ferret diseases and their cure. Ferrets live roughly for about 7 to 10 years. A ferret costs around $75 to $120, depending on its age and from where you buy.

Contrary to common belief, ferrets can be trained effectively though it may not be as easy as training cats or dogs. Training ferrets to learn the rules of the house will be a gradual process. The best way to reward a ferret for positive behavior is by giving it food. For behaviors that are not acceptable, paying no attention to the ferret or confining it in zupreem ferret food the cage will work wonders. As ferrets move around a lot, they tend to mess up the rooms. Nipping is also a major problem associated with ferrets. Nevertheless they can be trained to use the litter and not to nip.

Good ferret care is important for raising a healthy and happy ferret. Frequent interaction with their owners help ferrets get used to their new homes. It is also a good idea to spend a lot of time with your new pet ferret especially during the early days of domesticating. Ferrets that are used to playing with people since their baby days tend to be more friendly and playful. Though ferrets sleep almost 15 to 16 hours a day, they are very active the rest of the time and love to play with toys and frolic around.

Ferrets are carnivores by nature and require a diet rich in animal protein and low in fiber. Ferrets were generally given cat or dog dry foods before, but nowadays specially packed ferret foods are available in pet shops. Totally Ferret, Ferrotone and Zupreem are the most common ferret food brands among ferret owners.

A variety of ferret accessories are now also available on the market, which include toys, cages and other innovative items. Large cages should be bought complete with floors, stairs and tunnels. If you have enough space in your backyard, you can also make a natural abode for your pet, including hammocks, hanging bunks, cozy beds and custom litters.
