Most ferrets live up to ten years or sometimes more. This depends on how you to care of them so if you want to enjoy this friendship for the long term, it is best to read on further.

They snooze during the day for up to 18 hours or more but when they are conscious, they are very active and would like to play with their owner.

How do you looke after your ferret? Since ferrets have to dine, you should give them food that is consisting of meat and poultry products that are rich in protein and low in fat. You must never give them anything that is high in sugar and carbs as this causes health problems. The same goes for food intended for other animals.

Giving your ferret water is also important. You can give this to them in the form of a bottle or a bowl as they too get dehydrated.

Provide a roomy cage with enough space for them to hang out in. Ideally, this should measure 18″ x 18″ x 30″. You can get cages that have different levels so they can run up and down to have more fun in their cages. Check the cage for faults as you don’t want your ferret to escape when your out.

When your not giving attention to your ferret, you should have toys for them to play with. You should make sure that these can withstand their razor sharp teeth because they may swallow it. Exercising your ferret is also important, walking is good for them and you just make sure you have them on a leash.

When they are not in a cage, make sure you keep an eye on them. This way your ferret has less chance of escaping your home, chewing cords and munching on small objects that they might swallow.

They can be toilet trained to avoid stains on your carpet. Litter boxes will help with this so your ferret knows where they go.

Reward your ferret when they have done something good, like using their toilet, so they know what is expected of them. This approach can also be used to teach them to do other tricks. You can train them to come back to you when they run of by using squeeky toys. You can teach them tricks that dogs do, like roll over, play dead, and also how to fetch.

It is ok for baby ferrets to eat kitten food for the first 3 years. This should be done slowly as they grow older you can begin adding other items like meat or poultry bones and snacks like cereals, fruits and vegetables in moderation.

Make sure you take your ferret to the vet for check-ups frequently. Some states that allow ferrets as pets require you to have them vaccinated every year.

You will have a excellent time caring for a ferret as long as you have followed the directions mentioned above. Who knows? You might want to get another one as other have because the more, the merrier.
