Tips For Choosing Great Ferret Toys

Ferrets love their toys and they can never have too many of them; that’s a fact. So even before you bring your little furball home, make sure you have at least a couple of toys for him to play with. Besides, what better welcome home gift than a toy?
But as with all gifts, actually finding the right one can prove a little harder than you initially though. You can’t just go to the nearest pet store and buy whatever toys you find there. There’s a little more to ferret toys than meets the eye, as we’re about to discover. You’ll want the toys you buy to be safe, durable, and of course, great fun for your little pet.
Safety is paramount
Since having a ferret playing with toys is like having a toddler around the house, you have to be extra careful that the toys you give him don’t have small parts that your fuzzy can swallow, leading to dangerous intestinal blockages. Check the toys before you buy them and check them regularly after that to make sure no part breaks off and becomes a health risk. Definitely avoid soft rubber or latex toys. These are usually used in dog toys and aren’t very durable.
Toys that have become unsafe are to be thrown away. Don’t try to fix them and don’t think you’re throwing money down the drain; think about it this way: you might have just saved your ferret’s life.
Cat toys will do
Looking through the pet store’s shelves you might notice that not a lot of toys fit the bill. If this is the case and you can’t seem to find enough toys made specifically for ferrets, you can always go for the second best: cat toys.
Most toys that are good for cats are just as good for ferrets too. And given the way cats play with their toys, they’re generally very durable as well.
Balls are a must-have
Balls are a ferret’s favorite. Make sure you buy a couple of them of various sizes and look especially for the ones that make noise, such as the ones that contain jingle bells. You might find them annoying (and they are!), but your pet will love them.
Hard plastic balls are good, but fleece ones are also a favorite and ferrets can carry these around with them also giving you an opportunity to play fetch and have some fun.
However rare in pet stores, there are balls that are made specifically for ferrets. You can tell them apart by their atypical (much larger) size and the holes they have for fuzziest to climb in and out of them.
And speaking of toys that make noise, baby rattles are also great. They love carrying this around and they look so cute doing it.
Free improvised toys
Paper bags and cardboard boxes are also very popular with ferrets and since practically everybody has a couple of bags and boxes lying around, they’re also free. Your ferret will love to explore them and those bags make for excellent places for a hide-and-seek session.
Don’t forget the tubes!
For a better experience you’ll have to buy one or two tubes designed for ferret play. You’ll get the benefit of watching them as they clamor all over the tubes and travel at what seem like lightning speed.
