I have reviewed all the cages that look even remotely like the one I own. It almost killed my rabbit.

She stuck her head through one of the doors that really should have had a latch to keep it closed. Simultaneously, the tray fell out beneath her and the little door clamped shut on her neck. She was hung, and I’m so thankful that my mother was there to save her before she went into shock or suffocated.

I implore you: keep searching. There are much safer cages out there!

I bought this cage for a rescued miniature lop rabbit nearly 4 years ago. My rabbit uses a litter box for urine, and the slide out trays are
very easy to clean. I have had no odor problems with a once a week cleaning. My only criticism is the plastic platform that is now cracked. I have repaired it, but I am searching for a replacement at this time. some support under the platform is also necessary. I used a plastic dowel rod to support the front of the platform. My rabbit loves sitting up on it. He does not use the nest box. A great cage for a pet owner who enjoys a clean home.

DO NOT BUY THIS CAGE! Cheaply made! You will spend more time fixing the cheap parts that break during assembly then the actual assembly itself!!!! Waste of money.

      • Donahue :

I would STRONGLY implore you not to buy this cage. I had a very similar model, and my rabbit was almost strangled in it. She stuck her head through a little door that should have had some sort of clip to keep it closed, and, simultaneously, the tray fell out from beneath her. We had even reinforced the tray with a bungee cord.

The door clamped on her neck, and she was suspended, choking. Thank God my mom was able to save her before she went into shock or suffocated.

Please, don’t be fooled by the high price; it does NOT, by any means, indicate high quality. Continue your search, and find something safe!

The cage is a good size for our Dwarf Holland lop. Ours weights about 5 lbs. You will need to secure the water bottle with extra wire to insure that your pet does not knock it off. The hay bin does allow some hay to fall on the floor. The two trays under the cage are not very deep; I like to put newspaper and cedar chips in the trays to help with odor. All in all a good cage. The cage does roll easily. It is easy to clean and get the rabbit in and out of the cage.

Keys to look at when you’re selecting a place for your bun or cavy to reside:

        (1) the cage should be five times the size of the animal.
        (2) plastic is better than metal
        (3) don’t use cages with wire bottoms; this injures delicate paws on rabbits.

I do volunteer work with rabbits and guinea pigs, and the Marchioro is our favorite cage at the shelter. This particular cage is the most durable; plastic bottoms are always better than metal when you’ve got an animal in it for most of its day; they can take a lot of abuse and use.

When using this at home, its obvious the cage isn’t five times as large as the animal. Therefore, the animal is going to need a lot of outside-the-cage time.

I have never had to assemble a Marchioro cage. I will tell you that when they come apart, they are quite the pain to put back together. Because of the abuse the cages go through in a shelter setting, once they fall apart (meaning the bars come out of the joints) it is very difficult to get them back in. We end up using zip ties to put them back together and that’s not always effective. My best advice: buy it already assembled! Because of the pain in the hands in putting it together, I won’t give this cage five stars.

sorry to hear about the pet rabbit that bled to death. That’s a horrible thing to witness. for other owners, I would suggest that you monitor your rabbit in its new cage to make sure it is suitable for that bunny. Make sure its not repeatedly chewing on anything, getting stuck somewhere, or rubbing against any sharp objects (i.e. clip ends, sharp plastic joints, etc.).Each bunny is different; anything that appears harmless can be a death trap for them. with that said, i’ve had nothing but wonderful experiences with the marchioro brand tommy cage. i have the extra large size and it houses my two dwarf bunnies perfectly. its is easy to clean up because everything stays in the box. i added a second level because my bunnies likes to look around and it gaves them more space, kind of like a second story and they still have the room underneath. the top door is great- i use that more than i use the front door. it also looks nicer than the cheap all-metal cages. i found assembling it wasn’t to hard. Still I wouldn’t disassemble everything. When i had to move, I just took the top from the bottom plastic pan and moved it that way. I wouldn’t try to pull the wire walls apart – I’m afraid they wouldn’t connect back as solidly (like Ikea furniture – if you try to take it apart and put it together again it doesn’t feel as solid as it did before). i also found that many rescues and shelters use this brand – solid construction, reasonably priced, and a simple easy design.

I bought this cage for my 1 year old rabbit….He got his teeth caught in between the plastic and the metal where the cage snaps together…He lost one of his teeth and the bled all over the place and died of shock in my arms (most of which my 3 yr old witnessed)….I must warn against buying these types of snap together cages…This has been a horrible experience for me and my family…And I want to be sure another sweet bunny does not meet the same fate as our baby did.

      • Aharonovich :

This cage is made of a good quality plastic, but that is the only good
thing I can say about it. When you open the box you will find a
bag with lots of little plastic pieces. If you have a ton patience and time you will find yourself using up both very soon trying to assemble.
But with hope that there will be only one time I will have to do this,
I have forged ahead………..wrooong! The top lid got stuck at one point
while trying to undo, the whole cage came apart. I have 2 “other” cages
and now can appreciate their practical design.

      • Glazier :

After reading the posting about the unfortunate event of the rabbit losing a tooth and later passing on I must say that I’m deeply saddened. I’ve lost a few of my favorite bun’s before so I know how much it hurts. I have several of these cages and know others who have them as well and we all love them including a very good friend of mine who breeds and rescues rabbits who need a place to stay till they can find a loving home. As a fellow rabbit owner (6 to be exact) I must say that I’m very sorry about your loss, however I don’t believe that cage is to blame I think it just an unfortunate event which could happen in any cage.

      • England :

I implore all rabbit owners NOT to buy this cage. Don’t be fooled by the high price; in this case, it does not indicate good quality. My rabbit was almost killed this morning, when she stuck her head out of a little door (that should have had a latch to keep it closed), and the tray, which was rigged with a bungee cord for reinforcement, fell out from beneath her. The door clamped closed on her neck, and she was suspended, choking. Thank God my mom heard the commotion and was able to save her before she went into shock or was suffocated.

I have heard horror stories about cages from this company, even those that are of a completely different design than mine. My rabbit survived; another small animal might not be so fortunate. There are so many safe cages out there for less money; continue your search and stay away from this brand.

      • Eckenberg :

We have 2 large guineas that needed more space so we opted for the Luna 82 by Marchioro. Though it is marketed for rabbits it works great for our cavies but I would forewarn any cavie owners out there to make sure that yours are large enough that they cannot escape through the wire mesh before purchasing this product. I would argue against those that state that this product is made poorly. The frame and wire mesh are heavy duty and assemble tightly to provide a sound framework for the rest of the product. The peripheral items, e.g. water and feed dispenser, hay rack, etc. are pretty cheaply made but most of us already have a good version of these items on hand and so merely substitute these in their place. I personally believe that the negative comments re: craftmanship are more a result of improper assembly which I lay to blame squarely on Marchioro. There are no step-by-step instructions; merely a series of poor-quality photographs that leave you guessing about most of the assembly. I finally resolved myself to put it together based on my experience of having put together hundreds of like items from the past. If put together properly (which I finally managed to do) everything fits tightly and operates smoothly. Nothing is loose or flimsy and neither did I require a bungie cord to hold anything together. Marchioro….take a word of advice, improve your assembly instructions and photographs so that consumers can put your product together correctly and I think you’ll find most consumer’s negative remarks will take care of themselves.

Amazon shipped this amazingly fast (had it the next day even with the free shipping) BUT – the base was cracked badly in several spots and one of the clips was missing. I emailed Amazon and they shipped me another one at no charge. Meanwhile using packing tape, hubby fixed the broken tray and we decided to skip the house since it was missing a bracket. Hubby spent ages getting it together properly and even then the base popped out one morning leaving a very bewildered rabbit on the floor along with a lot of mess. Thanks to a bungee cord, it was back in place.

Then came the new one. Nothing cracked, thankfully, but it was the dickens to put together. Pieces kept sliding apart because its so poorly made – especially for the price. Finally, with great difficulty, he screwed on some metal brackets to keep the thing from detaching. We have a bungee cord across the base underneath again. OTH, Nickel the bunny loves his new hutch and there’s much less mess than with the outdoor hutch we were using at first.

Now to the point of this whole thing…. If I’d known what I know now would I have bought it? NO. Cage is nice, but the quality makes it way overpriced.

      • McIntosh :

This is a wonderful rabbit cage. There is enough room for a rabbit to move around. The nest box is great too! The shelf helps keep the food mess from getting throughout the cage. I line the two pull out trays with wax paper so all I need to do is fold it up and toss away. The cage had all the parts it needed and a tool for assembly. The assembly instructions are just pictures which is always a challenge, but I figured it out quick enough. I am very pleased with this cage and found Amazon.com to have the best total price. No shipping charge and no tax on Amazon.com. Large chain pet store would not match internet pricing.
There is a larger size of this exact cage you may want to consider if you are housing more than one rabbit.

      • Banker :

This is an excellent home for my rabbit. I purchased another cage/hutch initially which was a complete disaster….it had 3 major design flaws. This cage/hutch however has none that I can see. It is sturdy and designed with attention to details that rabbits and rabbit owners will appreciate. My bunny (iHop) loves his new home. He has explored every square inch, and I can detect his approval. I read some reviews that warned of the dangers associated with the nesting box, and I considered simply not using it, but iHop LOVES the nesting box, so I put a bungee around the top-to-bottom, and I bungeed it around the sides and fastened it with the bungee to the cage itself. No way, no how with those bungees will I have any problems with the nesting box. (I do have to admit, that it was a bit flimsy before I added the bungees….and I didn’t want to take any chances.) But so what if you have to add a couple of bungee cords. It is worth it. I am delighted with this rabbit cage, and so is iHop.

      • Gibb :

This cage was surprisingly good! I kept my mini-lop bunny in it. The cage is large and spacious, and has a high, beige, ‘wall’ to keep out shavings that get kicked out. it comes with cage clips as well. This product is highly recommended.

      • Miyamoto :

I bought this cage for my house rabbit. I have two other smaller Marchioro cages also and they are great. They are made in Italy and the quality is very good, especially the plastic they use for the pans. The quality is way better than anything else I’ve seen or used. It’s heavier and has a slick texture that makes cleaning easy. The colors are nice too, neutral gray pan with dark green wire. I also ordered two Marchioro corner litter pans that are great! The color matches the cage pan and the again, the plastic is very superior to others so it cleans up nicely. My only complaint is that due to the fact that the cage is so long, it’s not quite as sturdy as the smaller ones. More vertical bars in the design would have helped. All in all, for the price it’s a great cage. I don’t think you could do better. My bunny is very happy in it.

      • Keye :

We bought this cage because of it’s size. It is nice and big but came with no assembly instructions. Everything is intuitive except the door latches. We have ended up just keeping the doors tied closed which is very impractical!
