Ferrets can eat a lot of stuff. However, it is best that you know what is best for them in terms of proper nutrition. Let’s check what’s good for them!
COOKED CHICKEN MEAT
Ferrets are carnivores. Basically, they need to eat the right food which is rich in protein and fat but low in fiber. Cooked meat is a good sources of protein. Others claim that letting ferrets eat red meat and chicken meat can make them wild and bite you. That is just hearsay. As long as you don’t let them eat chicken bones, chicken meat is just fine. 1
FRUITS
They enjoy eating different kinds of fruit. The most common fruits that they can have are bananas, grapes, raisins and melon. Fruits, aside from tasting good, can also provide proper hydration (especially fruits rich in fluid) and additional vitamins that your ferret needs. You can also try other fruits but may sure that they don’t eat the seeds and some dried fruits or else it may cause intestinal obstructions. Remember to give this in small quantities and should not replace their main meals. 2
DUCK SOUP
When your ferret is not feeling well, this soup would make them feel better. Even when they are healthy, they can still have this as a special treat. A duck soup recipe really does not have duck in it. This is usually served for ferrets which are under a liquid diet. This is made up of 70% chicken (chicken puree with all its skin and fat) and 30% animal fat. You can always adjust how this can be prepared to better suit for ferret’s needs. 3
DRY FERRET FOOD
Pet stores offer a lot of food variety for ferrets. But don’t forget to check the ingredients to make sure that everything suits your ferret’s nutritional needs. There are some excellent brands which has everything in it. Remember that ferrets can’t digest fiber so it would be a good idea to feed them dry food without any grain listed in the ingredients. 4
TREATS
The best treats would be those which are rich in protein and low in fiber. Treats may include bits of roast poultry, turkey baby food, lunch meat with no preservatives. Grain-based products like breakfast cereals, crackers or bread may be alright but they do not provide the nutrition a ferret needs. 5

Ferret Nutrition Questions and Answers
Ferrets have high metabolisms and you can just feed them as much as they will eat. You don’t have to worry about feeding (for example) 2-3% of the ferret’s body weight. They’re good self regulators with very high metabolic rates so they will eat what they need. You’ll learn through trial and error how much your ferret(s) eat each day.

Well, I’ll start out by saying when you feed whole prey you can feed LIVE or FROZEN. Most people (including me) Feed frozen-thawed. Now the transition time really depends on the individual ferret. I know people who’ve put “just weaned” kits onto whole prey and I know a woman who just switched a 9 year old ferret to whole prey.
