Food is essential part of your ferret’s life. Good and healthy food will keep your ferret healthy, and likewise, unhygienic food will make him/her ill. As a ferret owner, it is your duty to keep the health and nourishment of your ferret under your scrutiny. You should make a daily diet chart to know what type of food should be given to ferret and when? Here are a few tips listed on the ferret food that should be taken into consideration:
• Check out that ferret cage has enough food to satiate the hunger needs of your ferret. Ferrets have fast metabolic activity, and as compared to cats and dogs, ferrets have high appetite. In order to satiate their diet, it is very necessary that you provide right type of food and high quality food material to your ferret.
• Make our choice when you select ferret food. Give emphasis to the quality of food instead of advertising and price factor. Analyze subtly about the positive and negative aspects of the brand available. These days, there are many different kinds of ferret foods are available, both, online and offline, and therefore, it is your role to choose the best food that is good for your ferret.
• Check the nutritional value of the ferret food that you are choosing. Read through the information given on the labels, as they provide detailed information about the product. Keep in mind that food having more protein in them and less of carbohydrates serve as the best choice.
• Ferrets require specific food at a particular age. It is because; the sensitivity of your ferret will depend directly on your ferret’s age. With age, the sensitivity of the body to foreign pathogens increases and this makes the ferret susceptible to diseases. Further, complete care and sensitivity should be taken if the ferrets are young. For this purpose, healthy and nourished food should be given to your ferret.
• Ferret food should contain high quantity of fat. Good amount of fat reserves is necessary as the ferrets are active and they burn the accumulated fats through their playful activities. But, again, keep in your mind that you do not over feed your ferret with fat rich food, or otherwise he/she would become obese, and which is again very harmful activity.
• Give your ferret treats only on particular occasions and not every day or every time. Remember, if the ferret becomes accustomed to the treats, they would not be able to have their regular diet, and in the long run this might make him/her affected with nutrient deficiencies. Once you are aware about the type of food that you should provide to your pet, it becomes very essential that you also consider following important things that you should avoid doing while feeding the ferret:
• Do not feed your ferret with cat food, as it not recommended and suitable for your ferret’s routine needs.
• Do not change the food brand of your ferret, as doing so will affect his/her digestive system drastically.
• Do not feed your ferret too randomly with any kind of feeds available in the market. Train him/her well to have a peculiar taste only. Keep these points in your mind.
And above all, remember that only a healthy ferret is a happy ferret.
